En el siglo XVIII se valoraba el trabajo de los artesanos, aunque no se lo equiparaba con el de los pintores. A estos se los consideraba artistas, mientras que los primeros no necesariamente tenían creatividad y sólo fabricaban objetos utilitarios. Más tarde el trabajo de los artesanos fue suplantado por la industria y los diseños de la cerámica quedaron a cargo de las fábricas. Pronto se notó que el cambio no había favorecido estéticamente al producto, lo que se hizo evidente en las exhibiciones internacionales.
