El protagonista de este relato es Bartleby un copista del estudio del abogado narrador quien llama la atención de este por su personalidad huraña apacible y pasiva. El abogado un día le pide al laborioso y silencioso Bartleby que verifique la copia que ha transcrito con el original y recibe como respuesta: “Preferiría no hacerlo”. El abogado narrador se siente desconcertado con dicha respuesta pero hace la vista gorda pues siente cierta piedad hacia Bartleby. A partir de ahí aquella insólita frase “preferiría no hacerlo” comienza a hacerse más frecuente y el abogado empieza a acostumbrarse a tan extraño comportamiento. No obstante conforme pasan los meses la situación se agrava pues un día Bartleby con su característica frase se niega a copiar es decir a hacer su trabajo.
