About this book

In this booklet we will explain how a group of neighbors built a network of community composting sites in Chacarita, Buenos Aires City. The collective is called RedVerdeSer. The process started in 2021. By 2024 there were 18 composting points. RedVerdeSer has reached out to other neighborhoods, such as Colegiales and Palermo. This means transforming tons of organic matter into compost, which is used by the neighbors to fertilize their own gardens or community gardens. The compost bins are 200-liter plastic or metal bins with holes at the bottom to drain the leached liquid generated during the composting process. These containers are placed on the ground, next to trees. The liquid fertilizes the soil. After throwing the organic matter in the compost bin, a layer of wood chips needs to be added. This action prevents bad odors, and helps to absorb the excess of humidity. This manual may help you to develop similar experiences in your neighborhood.
