I sommeren 1937 fik Elias Bredsdorff anledning til at mødes med den amerikanske forfatter John Steinbeck, der senere modtog Nobelprisen i litteratur. Steinbeck havde endnu opnået succes i Danmark, men var allerede en populær forfatter i kommunistiske kredse internationalt. Han opfattede sig selv som socialist, hvorfor han under sit besøg i København blev interviewet til dagbladet "Arbejderen". I 1942 færdiggjorde Elias Bredsdorff, der selv var aktiv i det danske kommunistiske miljø, en bog om den mand han beskrev som "en sæk fuld af historie, gode historier, brandsjove historier, om alle slags ting og alle slags mennesker".
