En abril de 1958, Jorge Ricardo Masetti, joven periodista argentino, atraído por la lucha guerrillera, logró trasladarse a la Sierra Maestra. Allí entrevistó a Fidel y al Che. A partir de ese momento, su vida quedaría ligada a la Revolución Cubana. Fundador y primer director de la agencia Prensa Latina, Masetti devino en 1963 el Comandante Segundo, jefe escogido para abrir un frente en la región de Salta, Argentina, como vanguardia del Ejército Guerrillero del Pueblo que debía encabezar el Che.
