En este libro se aborda la comunicación como actividad tripartita que involucra el lenguaje verbal, para verbal y no verbal, su relación con la pedagogía y las implicaciones en la competencia lingüística y comunicativa. En cuanto a las teorías del lenguaje verbal se estudian en cuatro capítulos: gramática tradicional, estructuralismo, generativismo y lingüística textual. Al lenguaje para verbal y los lenguajes no verbales se les dedica un capítulo donde se aborda una serie de sistemas no verbales como la Kinésica y la proxémica (las distancias y el contacto físico interpersonal y con el medio ambiente). Esta reflexión se centra en los gestos, los movimientos de las manos, el cuerpo, la mirada, la imagen, es decir, se dirige hacia fenómenos comunicativos no verbales presentes en las personas y en las cosas.
