British authorities assembled warships, deployed Royal Marines, and threatened destruction of the entire fleet — yet in British circles, confidence in imperial loyalty was irreparably shattered. The mutiny is now widely regarded as one of the final blows to British rule in India, accelerating independence within eighteen months.
