Fritz Mauthner (1849–1923) bezeichnet "Muttersprache und Vaterland" als einen Versuch, die Grundbegriffe der Nationalitätsidee deutlich zu machen. Mauthner wendet sich gegen die Ideale einer reinen Sprache und eines reinen Volkes, er lehnt Patriotismus in anderen Bedeutungen als Liebe zur "Mundart der Heimat" ab und plädiert gegen aus nationaler Gesinnung hervorgehenden Hass und Chauvinismus. Das ursprünglich 1920 erschienene Buch setzt ein Gegengewicht zu der Rezeption Mauthners als engstirnigen Deutschnationalisten und erlaubt es wie kein anderer Text im Gesamtwerk, die politische Dimension seiner Sprachkritik zu erkunden. Der Text dieser Neuauflage wurde durchgesehen und ist um ein Nachwort von Thomas Hainscho ergänzt.
