Desde el siglo I los escritos cristianos utilizaron con este sentido las expresiones Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento, esto es, Antigua y Nueva Alianza. Según una segunda acepción, con "Nuevo Testamento" se indica la colección de libros inspirados por el Espíritu Santo que dan testimonio divino y perenne de la venida de Cristo y de su obra de salvación.
