Mais après un bon dîner, il se sent si bien dans la chaleur de son salon qu'il renonce à se rendre chez elle. Pour s'excuser, il décide de lui écrire. Il place devant lui une feuille, trempe sa plume dans un encrier, et commence à rédiger la lettre. À sa grande surprise, sa main, prise de fourmillement, écrit toute seule, comme possédée… Des soupirs glacés, des apparitions — Malivert est en proie au surnaturel. Lorsque «Spirite» est publié en 1865, le spiritisme est à la mode. Théophile Gautier fait communiquer les morts et les vivants en un roman où l'amour semble impossible.
