About this book
"Life is sometimes life and sometimes only a drama, and one must learn to distinguish t'other from which."
The Longest Journey (1907) explores the cost of conformity and the courage required to pursue an authentic life, suggesting that life's longest journey is not merely the passage through it, but the arduous process of becoming true to oneself in a world that abhors difference.
Frederick (Rickie) Elliot, a physically frail, introspective and idealistic philosophy student at Cambridge, wants to become a writer, but as he moves from the sheltered world of the university into adult life, he struggles to reconcile his artistic ambitions with the expectations of society and family. His ill-fated marriage becomes the symbol of his bowing to social convention, stifling his creative spirit and estranging him from his own ideals.
Regarded as one of Forster's most personal and emotionally resonant novels, The Longest Journey lays the groundwork for themes the author would return to and refine in Howards End and A Passage to India—social and emotional connection, tension between imagination and reality, and the moral importance of authenticity.
Edward Morgan Forster (1879–1970) was an influential English novelist, essayist, and critic, known for his insightful observations on society and human relationships. He is often recognised as a prominent humanist writer, which reflects in both his literary works and his philosophical outlook; his books highlight the constraints that societal norms impose on individuals and advocate for greater empathy and understanding across class lines. His most famous novels include A Room with a View, Howards End, and A Passage to India, and his posthumously published novel Maurice revealed his identity as a gay man and his belief in the necessity of allowing individuals to live authentically.
