Vi è una tristezza buona, cioè quell'afflizione che consiste nella sofferenza per la propria lontananza da Dio e che può condurre fino alla compunzione, al sentire il proprio cuore trafitto da Dio stesso che ci invita a ritornare a lui. Il vizio di cui ci occupiamo è invece quella tristezza che non è secondo Dio, ossia quell'ombra che ci abita, ci paralizza e ci deprime, spegnendo poco per volta in noi la voglia di vivere. Il segno da cui si riconosce tale tristezza è l'incapacità di piangere: solo grazie al dono delle lacrime possiamo infatti sperimentare la tristezza quale giusta sofferenza per i nostri peccati.
