Die Pikareske ist in der Wissenschaft häufig auf die Ausgrenzung der Neuchristen im frühneuzeitlichen Spanien bezogen worden. Vernachlässigt hat man bislang die erotische Brisanz der Texte, die mit dem schlechten Leumund der Konvertiten in Verbindung steht. Weil diese nämlich nicht über ›reines Blut‹ verfügten, konnten sie nach allgemeiner Auffassung auch keine reinen Gedanken haben. Vor diesem Hintergrund vertritt Timo Kehren die These, dass sich die pícaros als Bewohner eines Königreiches begreifen, das dem biblischen Sündenpfuhl Sodom gleicht. Doch sind sie nicht der Grund allen Übels, sondern vielmehr das Symptom eines längst korrumpierten Gemeinwesens. Die Lust wird damit zu einem Medium, das Aufschluss über gesellschaftliche Konflikte gibt.
