Teacher Education in India: Issues and Perspectives

This research oriented book is based on an in-depth study of secondary teacher training institutions affiliated to ten universities in north India. It attempts to highlight the current trend in teacher education by analysing the problems and issues in teacher education and the reactions of educa¬tional administrators, teacher educators and student teachers to the way these problems are dealt with in teacher training institutions. The book covers all the important aspects of the theory and practice of teacher '.preparation, like philosophy of teacher education, types of teacher training, admission procedure, curriculum in teacher education, place of student teaching in teacher education, objectives and organization of student teach¬ing, guidance and supervision of student teaching, evaluating student teachers' performance. In addition the book presents an overview of devel-opment of teacher education, inservice teacher education and some recent attempts to improve teacher education programmes and practices.
