Far From the Madding Crowd (1874) was Thomas Hardy's fourth novel and his first major success. Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) was one of England's most influential novelists and poets, renowned for his vivid portrayals of rural life and the human struggle against social circumstances and constraint. Born in the Dorset hamlet of Higher Bockhampton, Hardy drew lifelong inspiration from the landscapes, dialects, and traditions of the region he later immortalized as Wessex.
