A substitute who grew up eating every day but Thursday draws her philosophy of education from Alice in Wonderland: no one knows what will happen tomorrow, but the survivors are prepared for the unknown. In February 2026, the U.S. Department of Education reported that districts spent only two-thirds of $1.1 billion allocated for student support. When they consulted stakeholders about how to use the money, they asked administrators and staff. They never asked the substitutes. This book does. The book closes in Torino, Italy, where the father of a substitute teacher — a Holocaust refugee — recognizes a young man standing under a lamp post where his father and grandfather stood before him.
