In volume 1, we start in a time when there was a German East Africa along with another migration direction, as there is today: Europeans, including Germans, emigrated to Africa.
Then comes the time of World War I, when an African named Kamante builds an airplane for the Reichswehr with the type designation "Kamante D 1," the African version of a "Fokker DR 1." It is flown by a favorite of Hermann Göring. After the war, we meet the first illegal immigrant in what is now Tanzania: Wilhelm Bergmann. Is he really Rebaf's grandfather? We then meet half-siblings Annah and Pa-aule, who both lead bizarre lives that are described in a humorous and bitingly ironic way.
