Ein auffallendes Merkmal der partizipialen Kategorie im Deutschen und Englischen ist die Polymorphie, z.B. "gewunken/gewinkt" oder "swollen/swelled". Nach einer Neuklassifizierung aller unregelmäßigen Verben beider Sprachen aufgrund der Struktureigenschaften der unregelmäßigen Partizipien wird das Prinzip der Systemangemessenheit, das in dem Modell der Natürlichen Morphologie entwickelt wurde, auf die Probe gestellt. Dabei wird untersucht, inwiefern die Größe formaler und stofflicher Gruppen von Verben die Polymorphie in dieser Kategorie hemmen oder fördern. Die Studie zeigt, daß auch die Struktureigenschaften der unregelmäßigen Verben das Flexionssystem definieren und die Richtung des morphologischen Wandels zum Teil bestimmen können.
